The University of Colorado in Boulder was founded in 1876, on March 14, when the Colorado state legislature provided money for the establishment of the university, by passing an amendment to the state constitution.
After the decision of opening the university was settled, Boulder and Canon City competed for the site of the university. Boulder City was chosen to be the home of the UCB campus, Canon City having the disadvantage of housing the Colorado Territorial Prison, being known today as the home of 6 other prisons, including the Colorado State Prison.
The University of Colorado Boulder is also known as CU-Boulder, UCB or simply UC and it is a public research university, located in Boulder, CO, being part of the University of Colorado system. The official colors of UCB are gold and silver, reflecting the mining history of Colorado State.
UCB contains 9 colleges and schools, offering more than 150 academic programs and having an enrollment of nearly 30 000 students. The largest college that is part of UCB is the College of Arts and Sciences, UC-Boulder also containing the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Leeds School of Business and the schools of Architecture and Planning, Law, Music, Education, Mass Communications and Journalism.
The teams that are representing UC-Boulder in collegiate championships are known as the Colorado Buffaloes, competing in NCAA Division I Big 12 Conference, in 9 intercollegiate sports. They have won more than 20 NCAA Championships, including 1 in football, 17 in skiing and a total of 5 titles in both men's and women's cross country.
